based on the real life events of world famous violinist Joshua Bell playing in a crowded subway as part of an experiment. In the space of 43 minutes, only 7 people stopped to actually listen to him playing. sadly, every child that heard and saw him playing tried to stop and listen, but the adult with them would drag them off hurrying along to wherever it was they were going without any acknowledgement of what they were hearing.
this is the sad reality of current times. everyone too busy to "stop and smell the roses" so to speak.
I especially love the first page illustration showing a grey street scene with the text "Dylan was someone who noticed things. His mom was someone who didn’t." Dylan's line of sight is completely alive with bright colours and details, whilst his mother's is completely blank.
this book is a great reminder to allow your children to explore the world around them, and take some time for yourself to enjoy it too.
also includes some background on Joshua Bell and more info on the experiment he took part in, at the back of the book.
